Product Description 365 reasons to love America!
The fife and drum of history mark the time of each passing day. And within their cadence, personalities, conflicts, discoveries, ideas, and nations peal and fade. American history is no different. From the starving time of Jamestown during the Winter of 1609, through the bloody argument of the Civil War, and to today, the United States is a tale best told one day at a time.
Best-selling author and educator Dr. William J. Bennett is a master of the story that is the United States. And in The American Patriot's Almanac, Bennett distills the American drama into three hundred sixty-five entries-one for each day of the year. Fascinating in its detail and singular in its grasp of the big themes, Bennett's Almanac will make anyone a fan of history, assembling even some of the most obscure details. Even better, it will make of everyone a patriot.

Almanac July 8, 2010 Mary Kathryn Got this as a Christmas gift for my grand nephew. Can't WAIT to give it to him so he can start 2011 off with this book. His dad is also excited because he wants to teach his sons real American history, not the politically correct, secular humanist stuff taught in government schools. Bill Bennett--you rock!
Great book, share with your family. May 10, 2010 DRE (Indiana, USA) This is an excellent book by an excellent author who cares deeply about all people in the US knowing their history. I bought this for my husband, but the whole family has found it interesting. It is a high quality book, with thick paper pages. I plan to buy many more of Bill Bennett's books to help our whole family get a strong grasp of our American Heritage. Great gift idea for the American History nut in your life.
Very interesting! March 4, 2010 ASH (Oregon) This book is so cool! It has all kinds of interesting facts and dates that you wouldn't have known before. It's interesting that the Republic of Texas declared its independence from Mexico on Sam Houston's birthday, seeing he was the first president of the aforesaid. It only takes a few minutes to read each enlightening page. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who is interested in our nation's past.
Oh, This is Interesting February 18, 2010 C. Jones (Missouri) Since this book is written as a daily "devotional" it is a great way to end the day. This is a wonderful book.
American Fun Facts, without the party bias February 9, 2010 R. Whitelaw (Morgan Hill, CA USA) While many may conclude that this volume is slanted more toward a conservative political ideology, that would be to sell it short.
This work is more about revealing and reviewing uniquely American historical events for each day of the year - regardless of whether or not that event is about Republicans or Democrats. It speaks with reverence about all the topics covered.
In my case, this has become our bedtime ritual with my three sons. There is a page for each day of the year. It will go into some introductory detail on an event that occurred on that date in history. It then follows up with about 5 one liners covering other things that occurred on that date in American history.
At the very least, it is a great way to get your kids asking questions about the topics covered.
In several cases, it has served as a jumping off point for much bigger discussions about American history.
This is well worth making a part of your daily routine with your children, or even getting you started in an appreciation for American history.
Why 4 stars instead of 5? In my case, I would have liked to have seen some of the subjects covered with a bit more passion for the material. However, perhaps it is that less passionate approach that will make this work a better fit for a larger audience. Just plan on bringing your own passion for the events you feel most strongly about.
